How to write Trigonometric Functions

Introduction:

The Greek words 'trigon and metron’ are the base of writing of word "Trigonometry". Meaning of trigonometry is ‘measuring the sides of a triangle’. This was developed to solve geometric problems involving triangles and studied by sea captains for navigation, surveyor to map out new lands, by engineers and others.

Currently, trigonometry functions are used in many areas such as science of seismology, designing electric circuits, predicting the heights of tides in the ocean and in many other areas are the introduction of writing trigonometric functions.

The terms used in Writing Trigonometric Functions are,

1) Sine:   The angle of sine is the ratio of length of opposite side to the length of hypotenuse.

Sin A= (opposite side) / (hypotenuse).

2. Cosine:  The angle of cosine is the ratio of length of the adjacent side to the length of hypotenuse.

Cos A= (adjacent side) / (hypotenuse).

3. Tangent:  The angle of tangent is the ratio of the length of the opposite side to the length of the adjacent side.

Tan A= (opposite side) / (adjacent side).

4. Cosecant:   The cosec (A) is the reciprocal of sin (A) and defined as ratio of the length of the hypotenuse to length of the opposite side.

                Csc A=1/ (sin A) = (hypotenuse) / (opposite).

5. Secant:   The secant is the reciprocal of cosine and defined as ratio of the length of the hypotenuse to the length of the adjacent side

                Sec A=1/ (cos A) = (hypotenuse) / (adjacent).

6. Cotangent:   The cotangent is the reciprocal of tangent and defined as ratio of the length of the adjacent side to the length of the opposite side

                 Cot A=1/ (tan A) = (adjacent) / (opposite).
